ShareThis

After taking a policy decision to hand over 150 hectares of land in Pallikaranai to the forest department, the state government will take steps to acquire patches of land in the northern and south-eastern parts of the marsh, measuring about 127 hectares, to protect one of the last remaining ecosystems in the city.

Hope this would be the start of some important steps to arrest the shrinkage of the marsh and reclaim the lands now being encroached and being used to dump garbage. Current rate at which the marsh area is shrinking is alarming.  For more on this please read a very good report put together by Ms Jayashree V of Care Earth about the delicate ecology of this area.

  1. As we are planning to buy a plot next to the pallikarani marsh land, Kindly advice whether we can proceed on this or not?
At least, please let us know where to enquire to get the details onl this.

The perungudi dump cleanup has got a stay order and the cleanup is not proceeding. Since there are schools and many new flats around the dump now, it is a must that the marsh has to be cleaned up and the dumping stopped. I think this is the highest priority work. Is there any group voicing for this? I would like to join any group that voices this.
