When Singapore citizens want to wait no more than two minutes at a train station, their Land Transport Authority (LTA) makes it happen. Hopefully, in the near future, this will be a reality for us Chennaites too. The Tamil Nadu government created the Unified Metropolitan Transportation Authority (UMTA) in 2008 and is in the process of equipping it with statutory powers. Once UMTA is fully functional, all modes of public transport, such as Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) and the upcoming Chennai Metro Rail, will be under its purview readmore.
